Soil, water and forage planning for your property. Start with the conditions on your own land and build from there.
01 / PLANTING & ESTABLISHMENT
Give your hedge a good beginning.
Choose healthy slips and prepare the planting line. Close spacing helps individual clumps grow together into the continuous hedge needed for erosion-control work. The planning tool uses 10 or 15 cm spacing as a starting estimate for one row.
Our Monto slips contain at least three tillers. Plant into moist soil, water after planting and manage competing growth while they establish. Ask us about timing and care for your location.
Row positioning and separation depend on the terrain and project. A general spacing example is not a design for a gully, dam wall or unstable slope.
A dense, established hedge can slow surface runoff and catch sediment. Contour placement and local conditions shape how it performs. Vetiver belongs within a wider soil and water plan, rather than a promise to fix every erosion problem.
Our original farm notes explore deep roots, soil moisture, nutrient cycling and wind protection. These are useful topics to discuss for your site. Root depth, moisture effects and growth vary; planting a hedge does not guarantee that surrounding pasture will be irrigated from underground.
Before planting, identify the runoff path, soil conditions and purpose of the hedge. Plan how it will establish and how it will be maintained.
Vetiver can be considered as a supplementary forage option. Young growth is generally more useful as feed than coarse, mature leaves. Its feed value and usable yield depend on growing conditions, harvest timing and management.
Discuss vetiver within your whole-property forage plan. Feed testing and ration advice help determine its role for your animals, including whether supplements are needed. Keep erosion-protection hedges managed for their primary job.
No fixed cattle-carrying capacity, annual dry-matter yield or nutrition percentage is promised here. Drought tolerance does not mean a property becomes drought-proof, and results from other climates cannot be assumed for your farm.
